The urban geoscience challenge

Human Interaction in cities poses complex geoscience challenges:

  • groundwater and flooding, obligations under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) (Directive 2000/60/EC), sustainable drainage (SuDS), risk management, extreme weather, sea level rise – climate change
  • foundation conditions and engineering properties – heterogeneous and dynamic evolution of urban soils
  • contamination, soils, artificial ground, surface/groundwater
  • resources, groundwater abstraction, thermal extraction/storage etc.
  • land use change, impacts due to development & regeneration

Europe’s future cities will depend on:

  • more efficient use of the subsurface
  • safeguarding of its ecosystem services
  • avoiding its conflicting uses
